My daughter has taken to paging through the art and activity books that we have lying around the house. She finds something she’s interested in and comes to me and says, “Mom! Can we make this?” She usually means RIGHT THIS VERY MINUTE, which is sometimes challenging for me, but we do get to a lot of the little projects. (An aside: I really like having a kid who is so very enthusiastic about everything.) Last week she decided she wanted to make a “soap pal,” which I think was in The Preschooler’s Busy Book or one of the related books by Trish Kuffner.

The original project directions call for sewing a bar of soap into a washcloth, but I thought it would be better to make a pouch that we could take the soap out of if necessary. So I dug around in the linen closet and found an old baby washcloth, sewed a hem on one side, stitched across the bottom and halfway up the back, and that was pretty much it for my part.

Becky chose and cut the fabrics for the face. She also stitched every piece on there (after I threaded the needle, knotted the thread, and took a few anchor stitches to keep things from moving around). Because I am compulsive, I gave her a little physical guidance as to where the needle should go in and come out — but she did the actual stitching.

I am proud of my kid. She’s proud of what she made. And she says she’ll never have to use the soap in the soapdish again.
