Super Chunk

I’m just talking here.

I think I’m good here.

You know those Mylar covers that you see on library books and nowhere else? Tonight I learned how to put those on, with the special tape and everything. It’s a little bit exacting, but no more than covering any other book. (I’d like to go on record right now with my loathing and contempt of stretchy book covers.) It was nice just to pick up a new skill, but my class was on location this evening at St. Paul Academy, where my instructor is running the K-5 library. I had been there before, years ago; I did a series of observations with a fortyish kindergarten teacher who wore flowered Doc Martens and who pulled a child’s tooth out in the middle of class to eliminate a distraction. I was happy to be back there tonight; it’s a place where it’s really obvious (even after hours) that the adults care deeply about the people they teach. (Alas, it is unlikely to be an option we can consider for our own children: see sidebar here.)

This has been a little bit of a crazy week for me, with my weekend being full of class and my week being full of my week. But I spent a little time establishing some ground rules for myself (I should be in bed) and setting up some dedicated schoolwork times and thinking about a couple of major projects in the pipeline, and I’m feeling like I have a much better handle on this life than I did last week.

I am exactly at least as busy now as I was before I quit my job. The one big difference is that nobody is paying me, and the other is that I’m happy to be doing what I’m doing. It’s better busyness — and I’m VERY much enjoying having a couple of classes with a few different people. I really missed out on those connections in previous semesters, taking one class at a time. All things considered, I’m in pretty good shape.
