poetry (and poem: April 8)

April 8th, 2007 · No Comments

So this poem-a-day project… not working out. The thing is, poetry isn’t a thing you can do in a hurry. That’s part of the grace and the joy of the medium, but it turns out not to be a good fit for my hectic little life. I will continue to do what I can, and I promise that this April will nonetheless feature more poetry than any other 30 days in my blogging history. :)

Here, then, is a poem for Easter — in its entirety, not because that’s altogether legal, but because it cannot stand any other way. You can buy 100 Selected Poems by e.e. cummings on Amazon. (Does anyone have another good online book source, other than the obvious

i thank You God for most this amazing

day:for the leaping greenly spirits of trees

and a blue true dream of sky;and for everything

which is natural which is infinite which is yes

(i who have died am alive again today,

and this is the sun’s birthday;this is the birth

day of life and of love and wings:and of the gay

great happening illimitably earth)

how should tasting touching hearing seeing

breathing any–lifted from the no

of all nothing–human merely being

doubt unimaginable You?

(now the ears of my ears awake and

now the eyes of my eyes are opened)

– e.e.cummings, pub. 1950 in Xaipe

One of my favorites.
