I’m just talking here.

Who’s in charge here?

After two-plus years of being remarkably tractable children, Adam and Becky suddenly require near-constant supervision. It isn’t about malice or mischief or even testing the boundaries — they are just interested in further-away things these days, and they’ve figured out that no grownup in the room means no grownup to tell them not to pour bathwater on the floor, which obviously means it’s okay to do that.

I woke up this morning from a dream in which Adam had learned to drive. Becky and I were in the back seat, and all the controls were buttons to push (except the brakes… I don’t know how he managed the brakes), and I totally trusted Adam’s ability to pull up to the gas pump. He had some trouble with the steering, and as I helped him out with that, I realized that some bystander might look askance at a two-year-old driving a car. So for the sake of appearances I moved into the front seat and took over.

I guess this is an improvement… last time I had dreams about being in the back seat of a moving car, nobody was driving and the car was going down a very steep hill. And these are way less scary than falling dreams for feeling out of control.
