Knock Off Wood

February 20th, 2010 · 3 Comments

My mom built things.  I have two bookshelves in my house that she made with her own hands (one is rightfully mine, and the other is a long-term loan from my sister), and I know that this kind of work is precise but not terribly difficult.  Just the same, I’ve never done it before, and I find it a little intimidating.

Just recently I found the blog Knock Off Wood, which is the work of one woman who loves the looks that are in the catalogs (you know the ones…) and just can’t justify the cost.  So she publishes plans for knockoff furniture that looks great, complete with cut lists, full-color diagrams, and inspiration photos.  The plans are free, and all she asks is that people give her feedback about using her plans and, where appropriate, photos of the finished items.

I love that this makes the process of building furniture seem possible.  (There are BEDS on this site, people.)  I love that this becomes an outlet for those of us who love this beautiful stuff and just can’t afford to spend hundreds of dollars on a console table. I especially love that there’s a downloadable button on the site that says, “I made this without my husband!”

My baby girl needs a bookshelf, as it turns out - just a little one.  And I’m not going to build it in the next two weeks, I don’t think, but when the time comes I will be able to build it.

I’m not accurate enough for wood, you can’t ease it in and you can’t block it. My usual level of measurement just isn’t good enough for the job.

Yes, Christie, you will be able to. Your precision with knittng will be more than adequate practice for such small projects. Also at Home Depot or other such places, if you pick your wood and know how many pieces of what size you want, they will do one or two cuts for free and numerous others for a doller. For many projects, this makes it literally easy. You go, girl! Love, Melody

Hey Christie, that bookshelf of mine you have was built by my own hands, with a little suggestion from Mom. So i’m quite sure if I can do this, you can do this.
